The tetanus toxoid is a vaccine used in the management and treatment of tetanus. It is in the vaccine class of medications. This activity reviews the indications, action, and contraindications for the tetanus toxoid as a valuable agent in the immunization against tetanus and wound prophylaxis. This activity will highlight the mechanism of action, adverse event profile, and other key factors such as the administration and adverse effects pertinent for members of the health care team in treating patients with tetanus. Tetanus toxoid is for the vaccination of cattle, horses, sheep, goats and swine against tetanus. Used for long term protection against tetanus. For long-term, low-cost and effective protection against disease caused by Clostridium tetani (tetanus). May be used for primary vaccination and/or as a booster dose in times of injury.

For primary immunization, give cattle and horses 1 mL intramuscularly. Give sheep, goats and swine 0.5 ml intramuscularly. Repeat in three-to-four weeks. Booster annually or at the time of injury, regardless of interval.

Shake well before use. For primary vaccination, administer 2 doses subcutaneously or intramuscularly about 30 days apart. Administer intramuscularly for horses.

For cattle and horses, give 2 doses of 1 ml each.

For sheep, goats and swine, give 2 doses of 0.5 ml each.

Revaccinate annually with a single dose.
